Population Growth and Birth Trends
In 2024, Hainan saw a net population increase of 51,000. The province recorded 98,000 births, 2,000 more than the previous year, raising the birth rate slightly to 9.37‰. Deaths totaled 66,000, with a mortality rate of 6.31‰, slightly lower than in 2023. Overall, natural population growth remains modest but positive.
Age and Gender Distribution
The gender balance continues to favor males, with 5.56 million men and 4.92 million women. The sex ratio stands at 113.01 males for every 100 females, a slight decline from the previous year.
In Terms of Age Distribution:
- Children (0–14 years) make up 17.84% of the population (1.87 million), down from 2023.
- The working-age group (15–64 years) accounts for over 70% (7.37 million), with those aged 16–59 totaling 6.65 million.
- Seniors aged 60 and above now represent 17.46% of the population, and 11.83% are aged 65 or older.
This aging trend, while less pronounced than in some other regions of China, signals the need for planning around healthcare and elderly services.
Urbanization on the Rise

Urbanization in Hainan continues to progress steadily. By the end of 2024, 6.61 million residents lived in urban areas, up nearly 97,000 from the previous year. Rural areas saw a corresponding decline, with the rural population falling to 3.87 million. The province’s urbanization rate now stands at 63.08%, a 0.62-point increase from 2023.
The data also reveals wide variations in urbanization between cities and counties. Haikou and Sanya lead the province, with urbanization rates of 83.5% and 73.3%, respectively. Some interior counties like Baisha, Ledong, and Qiongzhong remain largely rural, with urbanization rates under 35%.
What It Means
Hainan’s demographic picture reflects both opportunities and challenges. While the population continues to grow steadily and cities are expanding, the island faces a gradually aging society and uneven development between urban and rural areas. As Hainan plays a growing role in China’s free trade and tourism strategies, how it manages these population trends will be critical to its future.
