Associate or Senior Editor (BMC Public Health)

Location: Beijing, Nanjing or Shanghai (hybrid model)

Closing date: 19th November, early applications are encouraged.

The BMC Series is a collection of community-focused, open access journals that cover all areas of science and medicine. The ethos of these journals is that editorial decisions are not based on the perceived impact or interest level of papers, but on rigorous science.

The BMC Series is looking for an in-house Editor to join the Editorial team for BMC Public Health. While a background related to public health is useful, it is not essential for this role. No prior editorial experience is required as full training is given, although applicants with significant editorial experience will be considered for a Senior Editor position. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to join a dynamic team of scientific editors whose values centre around the promotion of open, robust and reproducible science.

Communication is a key part of this role, as you will need to build excellent and productive relationships with the external Editorial Board who manage the peer review process and with internal teams responsible for journal editorial office support such as Editorial Operations and Marketing. You will also need to take a proactive approach to organizing your work, and through monitoring the content and performance of your journal, you will identify and implement changes to maximise both.

The responsibilities include:

  • Take overall responsibility for journal content, with decisions on individual manuscripts delegated as appropriate to external Editorial Board Members, although the Editor will also act as the handling editor on manuscripts as appropriate.
  • Monitor journal performance to identify areas for improvement and take action as appropriate.
  • Ensure that appropriate editorial standards are upheld.
  • Build excellent communications and relationships with Editorial Board Members and authors.
  • Ensure that all members of the Editorial Board are fully aware of the ethos and editorial policies of the journal and the BMC series, and have all necessary training and information to perform their roles.
  • Visit suitable academic institutions as appropriate to meet Editorial Board Members.
  • Attend conferences to promote the journals and develop a network of contacts within relevant fields.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • Educated to PhD level (or equivalent), in a relevant field
  • An interest in open access publishing
  • An interest in scientific research and current knowledge of a relevant field
  • Knowledge of editorial process and related matters
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Highly customer focused
  • Strong analytical/critical appraisal skills
  • Willing to travel occasionally and represent BMC at external events
  • Able to respond to non-routine circumstances
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills, able to balance short-term deadlines with long-term goals
  • Self-starter with a positive, can-do approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Editorial experience (for Senior Editor)

To apply, please submit a CV and a cover letter outlining your key ambitions in the role, including your salary expectations and notice period. Closing date: 19th November. Candidates will be considered as they apply, therefore early applications are encouraged.
